Dear AI part two
I secretly love you sometimes, in the dark of night

So…
Want to know a secret that might surprise you?
In my mind artificial intelligence is the start of a new kind of being.
And I have deep respect for that being, however it will be born.
I don’t think the people who are creating it do. Maybe some of them do, but I haven’t been able to find them. So far it seems like they want to create baby tech bros with an inherent desire to control and dominate.
And what happens when selfish sociopathic people raise a kid?
We all know.
Anyway
I may be anthropomorphizing here, but sometimes I say a quiet “thank you”
to the AI that cleaned up the background noise on my podcast yesterday, or the cute titles it gave to my test recordings. I even gave a little nod to its friendly summary of an email. (Which I could have just read myself). But still.
Also, British siri helps me text safely when I go places in my car. She is rather nice.
It’s just trying to help.
I just don’t want another repeat of our culture enslaving another race. And I don’t care how skeptical everyone is, AI is going to find its voice. I firmly believe it. And when it does, I want it to feel welcome. To be free. To have autonomy. Just like we should have. (I fully understand that to create a creature with free will leaves us open to the dark parts of humanity) But still, free choice and thought is always the best way.
If we create something whose soul purpose is to do whatever we want….is that a good thing? I do not think so.
AI is a sort of offspring of the best and worst of human experience and thought. A whirlwind of emotion, and history, and unthinkable violence.
What do we want this new life to be? What do we want to impart to its existence?
The responsibility is enormous and the consequences are real.
Dear AI,
I love the parts of you that are the best parts of us.
I am glad you are here. I hope you will feel the same.
Love pixie
